The giving of gifts is a world-wide custom, bringing joy to both the giver and the recipient. Often as much fun is choosing the presentation – will it be a surprise or will you build up anticipation? Will it be given in private or amid family and friends? Will it be wrapped in simple paper, a gift bag, or a wrapping so elaborate we might hesitate to “ruin” it by opening it?
People have been making decisions about how to conceal until the reveal for a long, long time, at least since the invention of paper in ancient China in 105 A.D, from which the secret spread eventually to Egypt, then Europe.
The British used embellished paper, ribbons, and lace to enshroud their offerings and, early in the last century, happily traded the commonly used thick, brittle wallpaper for the newly available colored tissue paper.
Teenage entrepreneur J.C. Hall, the founder of what would become Hallmark Corporation, and his brother Rollie, began offering Valentines and Christmas cards in envelopes before 1915 and the company’s website notes, “Armed with the success of the Hall Brothers greeting cards, J.C. and his brother continued to innovate. Their first foray into other product lines came in 1917 when the Hall brothers ‘invented’ modern gift wrap. During the peak Christmas season, the Hall Brothers ran out of solid-colored gift dressing, and improvised by selling fancy decorated French envelope linings. Those sold out so quickly that the brothers decided to begin printing their own gift wrap.”
The rope, twine, string, and sealing wax that held the packages together gave way to Scotch tape some twenty years later, although we think it might be fun to revisit some of those methods today for a rustic approach.
