Unlike most sea creatures, seahorses are monogamous for life and are the only species on earth in which the male carry the unborn young. Seahorse is the title given to 54 species of marine fishes in the genus Hippocampus. “Hippocampus” comes from the Ancient Greekhippos meaning “horse” and kampos meaning “sea monster”.
Jellyfish or jellies are the major non-polyp form of individuals of the phylum Cnidaria. They are typified as free-swimming marine animals consisting of a gelatinous umbrella-shaped bell and trailing tentacles. The bell can pulsate for locomotion, while stinging tentacles can be used to capture prey.
Jellyfish are found in every ocean, from the surface to the deep sea. A few jellyfish inhabit freshwater.
Tropical fish are generally those fish found in aquatic tropical environments around the world, including both freshwater and salt water species.
Sea turtles, sometimes called marine turtles are reptiles of the order of Testudines. There are seven species of sea turtles. They are the flatback sea turtle, green sea turtle, hawksbill sea turtle, Kemp’s ridley sea turtle, leatherback sea turtle, loggerhead sea turtle and olive ridley sea turtle. Four of the species have been identified as “endangered” or “critically endangered” with another two being classed as “vulnerable”.
Starfish are star-shaped echinoderms belonging to the class Asteroidea. About 1,500 species of starfish occur on the seabed in all the world’s oceans, from the tropics to frigid polar waters. They are found from the inter-tidal zone down to 20,000 ft below the surface. Starfish are marine invertebrates.
