Sea Urchins are such interesting creatures, aren’t they? There is something pre-historic about them, yet they are uniquely appealing and so beautiful. They have become a popular choice to decorate with in beach homes around the world. Dana from House Tweaking describes them as, “Rigid, spiny and pain inducing, yet beautiful, delicate and awe-inspiring.”
Sea urchins are sometimes called sea hedgehogs and they are closely related to sand dollars (who knew?). Their shell (or “test”) is round and spiny, typically from 1.2 to 3.9 inches across. Common colors include black and dull shades of green, olive, brown, purple, blue, and red. They move slowly, feeding mostly on algae. Sea otters, wolf eels, triggerfish, and other predators feed on them. The name “urchin” is an old name for the round spiny hedgehogs that sea urchins resemble.
